Hudson & Hudson | Comedy Magic Double Act

Alan Hudson and Kat Hudson are joining magical forces in a brand new comedy magic double act, Hudson & Hudson.

What happens when 2 magicians get married? Is life full of magic surprises or do they still have petty arguments? Can you ever relax when your partner is constantly playing tricks on you in the middle of a boxset?

Alan Hudson and Kat Hudson join forces for the first time. And if they argue too much, the last time. They’ve been together for 11 years and married for 6 years, but this is the first time they’ve decided to try teaming up on stage. This is a premiere that could lead to worldwide domination, fame and fortune. Or divorce.

Alan Hudson (winner on Penn & Teller: Fool Us, The Next Great Magician) is teaming up with his wife Kat Hudson (Penn & Teller: Fool Us and West End’s Wonderville) in a comedy magic double act that could be the best thing they’ve ever done or the worst idea ever.

They’ve both appeared on TV shows around the world, including Tu Si Que Vales in Italy, Britain’s Got Talent etc, but until now they’ve never performed together.

Alan has been performing solo for his whole career, so how will he find it working with his wife? As Alan tries to make it the best show ever, Kat has other ideas and thinks she knows best. Kat also seems to think that onstage is the best place to air their personal relationship niggles in public.

Hudson & Hudson – in their own words

Alan says “The first rule we had when writing the new show was to not include any material that we’ve previously performed, so it had to be all new tricks. Trying to find magic that is suitable for a comedy magic double act is challenging. Especially when you’ve never done it before. Also, we both had to be fully committed to each trick. The rule is, if one didn’t like it, it was out. Being in a double act does have it’s benefits with the way you can do the tricks so it’s exciting to find new methods that haven’t been possible before”

Kat says “The rehearsal period has been interesting to say the least. I didn’t realise how easily distracted Alan can get. 10 minutes in, Alan’s mind will start to wander and start thinking about something else. I think it’s starting to make sense now why he never listens to me – nothing to do with me boring him at all!

Alan says ”People have often asked to perform a comedy magic double act but the timing hasn’t been right up until now. Now we’ve started performing as Hudson & Hudson, obviously we wish we’d done it years ago, but we also know it would’d have worked then. It’s like they say, the secret of good comedy is timing”

So what can you expect from Hudson & Hudson? Great magic (obviously), a magical gameshow, they summon up a ghost live on stage, the best card trick in the world and lots of LOLs. Also probably some built up tension on stage, especially if Alan has been leaving his underpants on the floor recently.

Review for Hudson & Hudson

“In Married at First Sleight, married magicians Kat and Alan Hudson introduce their show with boundless enthusiasm, demonstrating the obvious chemistry you’d hope to witness from a magical duo who share their career as well as their lives. While Alan is a confident and likeable magician who could clearly hold a show together ably on his own, it’s Kat’s endless energy and vivid facial expressions which really steal the show.

It’s Kat’s endless energy and vivid facial expressions which really steal the show.

While their fun bickering-but-loving couple dynamic threads the show together and provides plenty of laughs, the magic is also of high quality. They use some established effects, such as a book test and PK touch, all with a fresh spin on it, as well as less traditional displays of magic which keep things fresh enough to appeal to magic fans who have seen it all before. Sometimes I couldn’t even spot the sleights I was avidly watching for. The magic never takes itself seriously and is played for maximum fun, with climaxes ranging from silly to mind-blowing. Even the silly effects are a delight to watch, and create as much enjoyment as the higher-impact feats you might find in bigger budget magic shows.

That said, the epic last ten minutes includes the first Edinburgh Fringe bullet catch I’ve ever seen (fear not, fainthearted, no life is at stake here), and an effective kicker that ties the show together wonderfully. Every trick goes off without a hitch, and both magicians get the chance to show off their magical and comedy chops.

This is a really solid magic show from start to finish, anchored by two strong performers. Alan’s magic and creativity are top notch as he plays the straight man, and Kat, whose infectious positive energy makes her an ideal comedy character, is a standout in the festival and should hopefully inspire more female magicians to show off what they can do at the Fringe. If you’re after a fun magical ride anchored by two immensely engaging and talented performers, this should be high on your watchlist.”
